IdEA: Diaspora Leadership Training with Semhar Araia

On October 16th, as part of Global Diaspora Week 2014, the Diaspora African Women’s Network (DAWN) in cooperation with the International diaspora Engagement Alliance (IdEA) invited diaspora leaders and community members to participate in a 2-hour leadership training session with DAWN’s Executive Director, Semhar Araia, on the basic tenets of organizational leadership, public service and finding mission-driven work. Participants were introduced to these foundational principles to help them identify and develop an effective diaspora agenda for constituency building, civic engagement, and sustainable development.

This dynamic session achieved a high level of engagement from the audience. Diaspora women and men from a range of occupations, ages, and heritages talked about their approaches for what they understand as leadership, and expressed their concerns and observations about the topic from their own contexts. The workshop was followed by a brief networking reception. You can see more photos about this event in IdEA’s Global Diaspora Week photo album. For more information about DAWN, visit dawners.org.
